Giving servers a name

I know it is sometimes hard to find a name for a server or even a whole server farm, especially the moment you urgently need a name, you cannot think of one and you get aweful names like NT1, NT2, Linux1,... This page is made to prevent this from happening :)

In the name of security it is even recommended you don't use names which might indicate what operating system, application or version you're running. Naming servers like W2KExchange is very stupid because an attacker doesn't even have to use a technique like OS fingerprinting to get an idea of what the machine is running.

Essentially, you have to think of a theme and find names related to that theme. Here are some themes:

• Planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus, Pluto)
• King Arthur (Gawain, Mordred, Morgan, Ragnell, Elaines, Igraine, Iseult, Morgause, Excalibur, Guinevere, Lancelot, Merlin, Nymeway, Bedevere, Camelot)
• Star Trek: The Next Generation (Picard, Riker, Data, La Forge, Worf, Crusher, Troi, Yar, Q, Guinan, Pulaski)
• Star Trek Voyager (Janeway, Chakotay, Torres, Paris, Neelix, The Doctor, Tuvok, Seven of Nine, Kim, Kes)
• Plants
• Animals
• Greek gods
